Did you know that this lesson from Zig Ziglar is one of the most important lessons a network marketer must learn? If you do not learn how to help others in network marketing, you will be in a lot of trouble because the whole nucleus of the business is built around this principle.
Let’s examine what it means to be an upline. An upline is someone who gets more than just overriding commission from their network. If you want to earn money from your downline, you must be prepared to pay the price and earn it.
Nobody is going to do all the work for you and neither will you reap the rewards of an ever growing team unless you are willing to get your hands dirty and teach them how it is done. But of course, you must be able to show others you can build a team as well because a downline grows by following your example. I think that is the principle that Zig Ziglar is talking about.
Network marketing is different from sales.
At first glance it may not seem network marketing is different from sales. Zig Ziglar is known as a sales guru, but a lot of his information works in both scenarios. Here are some of the similarities and differences. In sales, you can sell as much as you want and create lots of retail sales (and this is also an important component in MLM). But you will have to keep selling over and over again. When the next month comes, you will need to generate volume yourself. But if you desire to achieve success in network marketing, your downline team must be able to generate volume themselves. Don’t hog all the sales – give some to your downline and let them earn but don’t ‘feed’ them forever too.
Is Zig Ziglar saying to “teach a man to fish” or to “give a man a fish”
In certain networks, like a binary plan, you can also ‘give’ or ‘place’ a downline under your active groups so you help one another to succeed as well. And that is okay. Good in fact, but it is much better to give your knowledge. To help them get what they want, as Zig Ziglar says. Part of that is to know what they want. It is no coincidence that every MLM company of any worth has training to find out a new associate’s goals. It is so you can fulfill the end result that Zig Ziglar talks about.
The Zig Ziglar Principle Applies to You as Part of a Downline, Too
You must also examine your role as a downline. Your upline is not your servant or your slave. You must help them to achieve their goals as well. For example, when they are short of volume to reach the next pin level, you must go all out to help your upline to reach their goal as well! When Zig Zglar says “Help enough people get what they want” he didn’t mean just those directly below you that can benefit you right now. It goes both ways. If you are able to help your upline to reach your goal, you will set the right example for your own downline as well and they will help you to reach YOUR goal when the time comes.
At the end of the day, when you help one another to reach their goal, it will translate into a powerful organization that helps one another. When he said “You Can Only Get What You Want, If You Help Enough Other People Get What They Want” this is what I think Zig Ziglar is saying for network marketers.
